Treats #74 - KDAY Broadcasts incuding Dr. Dre Mixshows & NWA, Public Enemy, King Tee Concerts (Live in Compton)

For a rap radio junkie like myself, Los Angeles' KDAY is up there with Mr. Magic on WBLS, DJ Red Alert on KISS, Stretch & Bobbito on WKCR, and Sway & King Tech on KMEL. In fact, in my eyes it trumps them all because KDAY was the first station to adopt an all Hip-Hop format in 1983. What can you say about a station who's street team included Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, Ice-T, MC Hammer, Tone Loc, Kid Frost, and Young MC to name a few. It's the station that coined the term "Traffic Jam" and was the first to play artists like NWA. Tapes of KDAY have been hard to come across, even in the age of the internet, but thanks to OldSchoolRapTapes a few have surfaced. There are a couple of Dr. Dre mixes that include one of his "Traffic Jams" (that you can listen to above), as well as concerts by NWA, Public Enemy, and King Tee in Compton that were broadcast on the station. There is also a recording of Ice-T introducing his "new" record "Colder Than Ever" that I had never heard before. These tapes are nowhere close to being CDQ so you'll have to deal with the sound quality, but 1580 KDAY was an AM station so there isn't much that could have been done about that.

Treats #26 - N.W.A. Live At Celebrity Arena '89

Some more rare rap shit. This is N.W.A. Live At The Celebrity Arena circa 1989. This isn't the concert from the 'Boyz In The Hood' tour poster above (but I love old concert poster/flyers so I had to use it), it's a N.W.A. and Eazy-E concert from a few years later. I say N.W.A. AND Eazy-E because Eazy-E had top billin' back then. N.W.A. rocks first and then they bring out Eazy-E. It's a trip to hear Dr. Dre and Ice Cube intro Eazy and play the hype man role. It's basically just like the "We Want Eazy" video. I assume Celebrity Arena is in Compton because at the end of the show the crowd starts to wild out and you can hear some dude yell "Compton's in the house!" This is N.W.A. in Los Angeles at the height of their popularity. As a bonus, I also upped Eazy-E & Dr. Dre Live At The Roadium Swapmeet, which is a 10 minute Dr. Dre megamix hosted by Eazy Motherfuckin' E from 1986.

Eric "EAZY-E" Wright Tribute Mix

It's hard to believe it's been 13 years now since Eric Wright, one of Gangsta Rap's pioneers, passed away. N.W.A. might be the most important Hip-Hop group of all time (think about all the rappers that have some kind of connection to the group). It's a trip to go back and listen to some of Eazy's music knowing that he died of full blown AIDS. "Gimme That Nut", "She Swallowed It", "I'd Rather F**k You" are all reminders of that, but it was his gangster shit that made him Eazy "MOTHERFUCKIN" E.
